A New Day For American Diets
Few may have witnessed the big, ostrich-like bird taking
a big-footed, giant step into New Millennium popularity. But the American
Heart Association, nutritionists and American consumers continue to discover
the merits of emu meat. Like any
new product, the introduction of emu meat to the American table was met
with some skepticism. However, persistent good taste and high
quality earned it recognition as a legitimate menu option and the
choice for health-conscious Americans.
"One of our priorities is to let consumers know the nutritional
values of emu meat," said Neil Williams, former president of
the American Emu Association. "We need
to limit animal fat in our diets," said Penny M. Kris-Etherton of the American
Heart Association's Nutrition Committee. And the AHA now recommends emu as
a heart-healthy meat. Following the AHA's lead, hospital dietitians now
recommend emu meat to heart patients who don't want to give up red meat in their
diets. And the fitness crowd has also climbed aboard the "emu express."
Last
August, emu meat earned the "Taster's Choice Award" from "Muscle & Fitness
Magazine" and raves from "Planet Muscle Magazine."
American dietary
professionals have turned up the tempo of the emu option, and once the word
was out, popular restaurants added emu to their menus, satisfying demands
for great taste without exceeding recommended fat and cholesterol intake.
